Scott was raised just outside of Cleveland in a suburban area of Ohio. In 1997, he graduated from the College of Wooster with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art, specializing in sculpting. He enrolled in a sculpture class during his first semester as a pre-med student. He was examining a chair in the sculpture studio when he suddenly realized that it had been designed. He quickly learned that this was the area of industrial design.
In the spring of 2000, he graduated with an MFA in industrial design from The Rochester Institute of Technology. He discovered that his contacts with the mechanical and manufacturing engineering, woodworking, and metalworking departments, in addition to the robust industrial design department, were crucial to his growth as a designer.
