Thomas A. Ashton delivered goods, primarily paraffin, in 1866 while trundling his handcart through the cobblestone streets of Sheffield and the surrounding area.
He observed that the burgeoning industrial revolution was experiencing severe hunger as he made his rounds, supplying his customers. Pulleys, shaftings, and other power transmission equipment were required by the Sheffield industry, but the sole suppliers were typically in London. If some machinery failed and parts were urgently required for repairs, there would inevitably be a considerable wait.
So, with very little space and a lot of faith from his clients, a clever Thomas Ashton leased a space in Norfolk Street and started stockpiling for the demands of the Sheffield industry. Where he couldn't stockpile, he started manufacturing and eventually built up a sizable customer base.
