The GSM group's founding business was GSM Graphic Arts, which was established in 1974. They were based in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, and were experts in producing metal nameplates and labels. After experiencing quick expansion, Valtech Industries was bought and relocated to the Thirsk location in 1979, giving GSM its first access to machining and fabrication facilities. Machined pressure receptacles and magnetic stirring devices are only a couple of the products that Valtech specialised in for lab use. Later, with the introduction of CNC punching and folding machinery, sheet metal capability was added.
